Electrolysis

Many women and men struggle with unwanted hair but there’s no need to struggle any longer.  Shaving, depilatory creams, tweezing and razors can deal with your excess hair temporarily. However, they certainly are not permanent solutions.  In addition to this, they can take a long time to carry out and be very harsh on your skin. On balance, this means that these methods are often considered inconvenient and ineffective.  Regrowth never seems to be far from the surface of your skin.  So, what is the answer?

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a permanent method of hair removal that has been used for many years. A fine, sterile needle is inserted carefully into the root of the follicle. Then, a tiny rapid pulse of electricity is emitted. The result is that this closes the blood supply to each hair. This in turn, destroys it. The Apilus® Technology System we use is recognised as the most advanced electrolysis system available.  It allows us to deliver pinpoint precision with the least discomfort. With equal importance, the highest safety rating can be maintained.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

Is electrolysis suitable for anyone?

Lots of people experience unwanted hair growth including those who are transitioning, are peri or menopausal or have polycystic ovary syndrome.  Rest assured, our treatments are entirely tailored to suit your individual circumstances.

Will I find electrolysis painful?

We use the Apilus machine, to ensure you will have the most comfortable electrolysis treatment available. While it’s not pain-free, we will adapt the treatment to keep it within your own tolerance levels whilst importantly, maintaining effectiveness.

Will electrolysis permanently get rid of my unwanted hair?

Electrolysis is a progressive treatment, and as hair grows in different stages,  multiple treatments will be required. With this in mind, given time and patience, you can achieve permanent hair removal.  However, we cannot control hormonal changes that can encourage follicles that were previously dormant, to start producing hair again.

Will electrolysis damage my skin or cause scarring?

You can expect some redness and swelling immediately after your treatment.  This, however, should disappear after a few hours. Sometimes small pinprick crusts can appear after your treatment, although to emphasise, if you follow our aftercare advice, scarring should not occur. Any other side effects are extremely rare, and we are certainly committed to using every precaution to avoid them occurring.

With frequent electrolysis sessions your skin can be prone to dryness. In the event that you experience this, we recommend using a perfume-free moisturiser to nourish your skin.

In conclusion, you should contact us immediately if you experience any other side effects.

How many treatments am I likely to need and how frequently?

At your consultation, we will discuss the factors that can affect how many treatments you may need. Remember that each hair follicle will require several treatments before it is unable to produce new hair.  This can take months and even years. It can depend on the type of hair, the density, and the frequency and length of treatments you have.

To put this into context, at the start of your treatment programme you may require a lengthy treatment every week.  You could still be coming in a couple of years or so down the line, but just for a short treatment every few weeks.  This could just be for a few resistant hairs or because hormonal influences are causing new hairs to develop.

When should I come in for my electrolysis treatment?

Each hair goes through a cycle of growth, shedding and re-growth. You should come in when your hair is starting to grow through. Do not pluck in between treatments as this will affect the treatment’s success.  This in turn could make it longer for you to get the results you want.

What after-care do I need?

DO’s and DONT’s

DO

Apply witch hazel gel to the treated area three times in the first 24-48 hours after your treatment to cool and keep the area clean.

Use Aloe Vera gel twice a day between treatments as this helps maintain moisture levels. We recommend you use Environ AVST creams.

Bathe your skin with a cold or iced saltwater solution regularly in the hours following your treatment. This will cool the skin, reduce inflammation and speed up the healing process. (Add half a teaspoon of salt to 1 cup (250ml) of boiling water and chill.)

Ensure you use sun protection daily to prevent sunlight interfering with the healing process. We recommend using Jane Iredale mineral make-up since it will not cause any irritation while working as an anti-inflammatory.

DO NOT

Avoid touching the area with your fingers because this may introduce bacteria to the treated area.

Refrain from picking any spots or crusts that may appear as it may slow the healing process down. If spots or crusts do appear, do not apply any make-up on them other than Jane Iredale mineral make-up.

Minimise expose to the sun or sunbeds for two weeks after your treatment as the treatment area is sensitive to UV exposure. If you are having an intensive course, avoid sun exposure on the area for the duration of your course. We recommend using strong sun protection and Jane Iredale mineral make-up to act as an effective sunblock.

Do not swim for 48 hours after your treatment because your skin is susceptible to water-borne infection.

What our clients say

“Eighteen months ago, I was deeply depressed by facial hair, both the feel and appearance of a stubbly chin. I was also quite apprehensive about the process. Sarah has done wonders. From initial 45 minute sessions weekly, I now have a nearly smooth skin. I only need a fortnightly ‘tidy up’ of 15/20 mins. It is quite a transformation! The pace and level of treatment has been entirely down to me. Crucially, I have really valued Sarah’s flexibility in understanding my needs and expectations. As a result, I now look forward to treatment sessions, and am wondering what to do next!”

Heather, Hove

“I have been coming for electrolysis on my chin. I asked Sarah’s advice to find somewhere to carry on with the treatment as I was moving to London. The couple of places I tried made me even more appreciative of the high quality, good value service that Sarah provides. I wish I could find somewhere like you in London! The places I tried used cheap-looking machines with a continuous current that have left my chin in a bit of a state for a few days afterwards.”
