Freedom from Unwanted Hair

Many of us find that semi-permanent hair removal methods aren’t really suitable, convenient or even effective enough to keep our unwanted hair under control. Electrolysis is completely permanent and used appropriately, will give you freedom from hours spent using creams, tweezers or razors especially for those difficult areas, leaving your skin smooth and maintenance free.

Electrolysis has been used as a permanent hair removal method for many years. It works through the careful insertion of a tiny needle which sends a rapid and miniscule pulse of electricity to the root of the follicle, closing its blood supply to the hair.

Sarah Hurst Skin Clinic has been practicing electrolysis for over 30 years and we are proud to be considered experts in all aspects of unwanted or excess hair. We regularly welcome new clients who have been recommended to our clinic for consultations on their individual requirements.

The Apilus® Technology System offers 100% hair removal and is recognised as the most advanced electrolysis system available, allowing us to deliver pinpoint precision with the least discomfort and highest safety rating.

There are many reasons why customers come to us for electrolysis. Some semi-permanent creams are too harsh for sensitive areas, or you may suffer from sensitive skin, particularly on the face. We find that both men and women often struggle with unwanted facial hair so shaving or tweezing becomes a gruelling daily task as the regrowth seems never far from the surface of the skin.

How does Electrolysis work?

A fine needle, which is the same size as the hair itself, is inserted into the hair follicle where an electric current is applied, this is to destroy the hair follicle itself in aim to prevent future hair growth.

How Painful is Electrolysis?

Because Sarah Hurst Skin Clinic uses the Apilus machine, you have the most comfortable electrolysis treatment available. We’re not going to lie and say that it’s pain free, but we can adapt the treatment to keep it within your own tolerance levels whilst maintaining effectiveness.

Is Electrolysis Permanent?

Yes, given time. It is a progressive treatment, and hair grows in different stages and that is the reason it requires multiple treatments, but given time and patience you can achieve permanent hair removal, However we can’t control hormonal changes and influences.  Hormonal changes can encourage follicles that were previously dormant to start producing hair.

Can Electrolysis damage my skin, or cause any scarring?

After treatment you can expect some redness and swelling, but should disappear after a few hours. With frequent electrolysis sessions your skin can be prone to dryness. A good perfume-free moisturiser can help combat this. Also sometimes small pinprick crusts may appear after treatment, however with the right aftercare not scarring should occur. Any other side effects are extremely rare and we commit to every precaution to avoid them occurring. If you experience any other side effects you should contact us immediately.

How many treatments will I need and how frequently?

This varies from person to person depending on a multiple of factors. This will be discussed with you at your consultation. What you have to remember is that each hair Follicle will require several treatments before it is unable to produce new hair.  This can take months and even years depending on the type of hair, the density, the frequency and length of treatments.  To put this into context, at the start of your treatment programme you may require a lengthy treatment every week.  You could possibly still be coming a couple of years or so down the line, but just for a very short treatment, every few weeks.  This could be just for a few, more resistant hair, or because hormonal influences are causing new hair to develop.

When should I come in for my Electrolysis treatment?

There are hair growth phases, you should come in when you hair is starting to grow back in. Please do not pluck in between treatments as that will affect the effectiveness of the treatment itself, and will take longer for you to get the desired results.

What after-care is needed?

Do – apply witch hazel gel to the treated area 3 times in the 24-48 hours following treatment.

Do – apply Aloe Vera gel twice a day between treatments to maintain moisture levels. This can be replaced with Environ AVST creams.

Do – if your skin feels hot after treatment; bathe with a cold or iced salt water solution regularly in the hours following treatment, this reduces inflammation and speeds up the healing process. (Add half a teaspoon of salt to 1 cup (250ml) of boiling water and chill.)

Do – apply sun protection daily to prevent sunlight interfering with the healing process. The best method for this is to use Jane Iredale mineral make-up as this won’t cause any irritation to the skin and also works as an anti-inflammatory.

Do not – touch the area with your fingers.

Do not – pick any spots that may appear, sometimes small pinprick crusts may appear and it is important they are not removed from the skin sooner than the natural process would allow.

Do not – wear make-up (except Jane Iredale mineral make-up) on the area if any crusts or spots appear.

Do not – Expose the skin to Sun, Sunlight or Sunbeds for 2 weeks after treatment. If you are having an intensive course we recommend that you avoid sun exposure on the are for the duration of the course of treatment. We appreciate that it can be difficult so we recommend using strong sun protection and the use of Jane Iredale mineral make-up to act as a good sunblock on the area.

Do not – pluck the hairs in between treatments as this interferes with the growth cycle ond strengthens the hair. The best method for managing the hair growth is to trim them back, or shave if absolutely necessary, ensuring that you have left enough time for them to be long enough for your next treatment.

Do not – swim for 48 hours after treatment.

What our clients say

“18 months ago I was deeply depressed by facial hair, both the feel and appearance of a stubbly chin. I was also quite apprehensive about the process. Sarah and Sophie have done wonders. From initial 45 minute sessions weekly, I now have a nearly smooth skin needing only a fortnightly ‘tidy up’ of 15/20 mins. It is quite a transformation! The pace and level of treatment has been entirely down to me, and I have really valued Sarah’s and Sophie’s flexibility in understanding my needs and expectations. I now look forward to treatment sessions, and am wondering what to do next!”

Heather Mayall, Hove

“This is Rachel that used to come for electrolysis on my chin. Just before I moved to London, I asked Sophie’s advice for how to find somewhere new here. I wish I’d written it down, as I’m really struggling. The couple of places I’ve tried have made me even more appreciative of the high quality, good value service that you provide. I wish I could find somewhere like you in London! The places I’ve tried have used cheap-looking machines with a continuous current that leaves my chin in a bit of a state for a few days afterwards.”
