Cosmelan® Treatment for Hyperpigmentation

Don’t put up with discoloured or unsightly blotches and blemishes anymore! Some hyperpigmentation may fade over time. Some will remain unless you decide to do something about it. Use the Cosmelan® skin treatment procedure to safely diminish and remove hyperpigmentation marks. It’s faster, permanent and you’ll be amazed at the results!

What is Cosmelan®?

Cosmelan® is the world’s leading professional pigmentation-removal method and is suitable for every skin type. It targets all forms including hyperpigmentation including Melasma, Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, Sun Spots and Freckles.

What is hyperpigmentation and how does it occur?

Hyperpigmentation occurs when too much melanin is produced.  It shows in a localised area as dark spots and irregular skin colouration. There are several potential factors that cause hyperpigmentation. For example, acne, scarring and hormonal changes that can cause rosacea.

What is the Cosmelan® process?

Cosmelan® includes a prep peel 2 days prior to the in-clinic treatment mask (the treatment mask has to be removed at home after several hours), followed by a long-term homecare programme. This effectively acts on all phases of the hyperpigmentation process.

The results?

Hyperpigmentation is eliminated by using an advanced and exclusive combination of 6 laboratory-formulated ingredients.  Most importantly, it also prevents its reappearance and stops the formation of new dark spots. It is achieved through Cosmelan®’s intensive corrective effect. This regulates the overproduction of melanin to keep hyperpigmentation under control.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

How does Cosmelan® work?

Cosmelan® works with an intensive corrective effect that regulates overproduction of melanin in the melanocytes.  It also inhibits and controls the appearance of new dark spots. It’s dual corrective and controlling action achieves both short and long-term results. It keeps hyperpigmentation under control by acting on all phases of the hyperpigmentation process.  Just as important, it prevents it reappearance and stops the appearance of new dark spots.

What does the Cosmelan® method involve?

Firstly, we complete an in-depth consultation and provide products to prepare the skin prior to the rest of the treatment beginning. Next we perform a prep peel with Mesopeel Melanostop 48 hours prior to starting your treatment. This prepares your skin for the treatment by removing dead skin cells and hydrating the skin.  Crucially, this allows the Cosmelan® to work at a deeper level.

The main method consists of one in-clinic treatment followed by a home maintenance, which should be continued for at least 9 months – 1 year.

Cosmelan® 1

This is the professional treatment mask which is applied by a skin professional in the clinic.  This should be left on for a period of between 8 – 12 hours depending on your skin colour (measured on the Fitzpatrick scale), skin type and form of hyperpigmentation.

Cosmelan® 2 should then be used at your home. This process is started 48 hours post the in-clinic mask and is recommended to be used three times daily in the first month. Next you can apply the product twice daily in the 2nd and 3rd month and once in the evening in the 4th month onwards.

Why is it important you use the homecare products?

The Cosmelan® 2 maintenance cream should be continued to stop your skin’s melanocytes producing the same abnormal amount of melanin. If this advice is not followed for the required of time, the hyperpigmentation is likely to return.

How quickly can results be seen?

Results can be seen in as little as two weeks. You will continue to see improvement with the best of the results being seen between 30 and 60 days following the treatment.

Will I experience any after effects and how long does this last?

Peeling, redness and irritation can be expected following your treatment. This may last until the application of Cosmelan® 2 is reduced in the second month. We recommend you apply Melan Recovery to the skin to reduce the peeling and irritation.

Can this treatment be performed only on the face?

Cosmelan® can also be used on the body. It is frequently used to treat hyperpigmentation on the back, shoulders, arms, décolletage and hands.

Are there any aftercare products that I should avoid and is it safe for me to use other products at any point during the method?

Products containing Vitamin C or retinols should be avoided throughout the treatment. They are too stimulating for the skin as Cosmelan® already contains these ingredients. Full aftercare will be given to you at the time of your consulation.

Can the treatment be combined with any other treatments?

No other procedures should be performed during the Cosmelan® treatment. The only exception is the Melanostop peel which is performed 48 hours before your in-clinic treatment. This prepares the skin for the treatment by removing dead skin cells.  In addition, it also hydrates the skin thereby allowing the Cosmelan® to work on a deeper level.

Why would this treatment be chosen over other treatments for hyperpigmentation, such as laser?

Laser is a commonly used and highly effective treatment.

Lighter skin

It is particularly effective for low and medium phototype skins (phototype 1-3) where hyperpigmentation is more visible on the skin. This being said,  a maintenance treatment must be followed to prevent reappearance.

Darker skin

Laser is less effective in higher phototypes (phototype 4-6) and also, the likelihood of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is higher. The Cosmelan® method is better tolerated, more efficient and involves a lower risk of recurrence and longer-lasting results.
